The Colon, phlegm and diet!

The colon is an amazing organ. It has the amazing ability to absorb water and nutrients from the 'soup' that has just come through the small intestines. It has (in a healthy colon) a large percentage of friendly bacteria that process vitamins for us, so that only the unusable waste matter is expelled. Because the absorption of the colon is filtrated straight into our blood, its condition is of paramount importance to our health and to our skin condition.

Millions of years back our ancestors had to learnt by trial and error if a particular plant was good or poisonous. It is a fair bet that those whose colon absorbed the poison as it flowed through their system died. Also that those that survived had a trick down their colonic sleeve! The trick was to release thick phlegm, just like a snail does, on its inner surface so as to limit the colon's absorption into the blood stream.

The good news is that we are descended from the survivors, the bad news is that our modern diet doesn't get rid of the phlegm.

In Chinese Medicine it is recognised that a number of foods generate 'Phlegm' in the body. These are dairy products from cows (goat and sheep are OK) sugar and citrus fruits (excluding lemons). These foods generate phlegm visibly in the nose/ sinuses and occasionally chest and not so visibly in the colon.

Modern diet is composed of a large proportion of phlegm generating processed foods with little roughage. The colon generates phlegm to protect itself from the 'poison' but there is not enough roughage to subsequently scour clean the colon surface. This goes on for years, end result? Look at the pictures.

The 'gunge' shown has taken years to develop as layer upon layer of phlegm hardens and stick to the inside of the colon .These were removed through fasting and the use of colonics.

colon phlegm that comes out with detoxing

These pictures are extreme but salutary. Most of us may not be that bad. However, our colon needs to reabsorb nutrients into the body and it cannot do that if its coated with phlegm.

How can we help ourselves in this modern age of fast convenient foods?

The easiest rule of thumb is that if it comes out of a factory rather than from the ground or from a tree then its not much good for us. More specifically all refined flours, processed sugars and dairy products should be minimised or whenever possible eliminated from one's diet.

Eat more vegetables, pulses and fruit for roughage. Rule of thumb? About 50% vegetables, 20% nuts/pulses. 5% red meat, 5% whitemeat, 10% fish, 10% fruit.

However this will not undo years of misuse. For that you will need to detoxify your colon.
